LIFE AS A TRAVEL BLOGGER by Priscilla Tawie

Every four months, Abang Fadli Abang Alibasah would be out in the seas, working as a Marine Engineer on board various LNG vessels around the globe. Then, on his three-month off-days, he usually spends the time traveling and discovering the wonders of the world.

TIRING BUT FUN

THE 34-year-old Kuching lad is a local travel blogger and has been blogging since 2007. Initially, it was to record his personal life stories as a student to update his parents on his well being as he studied far away from home.

After he graduated, he fell in love with travelling, explaining "I like to explore and see the wonders of the world. Every place has its own uniqueness. Do not believe what people and the media told you. See it for yourself as you learn the culture, and adapt it to your own life." Starting from that time, his blog would be filled with his experiences and his journey throughout the world.

He also enjoys meeting new people from different parts of the world. It helped him improve his social skills especially when he is travelling alone. "As a travel blogger, I feel good whenever I help my readers through my travel tips and experience that I have posted."

Two years after that, Abang decided to have his domain and had chosen to be a travel blogger officially. "It was then that I registered my blog website under www.mytravellicious.com. I cannot believe it has been 11 years!"

As a travel blogger and travel enthusiast, Abang had travelled to more than 30 countries in five differ- ent continents. "Last year I travelled to Indonesia, Japan, Thailand, United Kingdom, France, Italy, Belgium, Gibraltar, Cyprus, Oman, Qatar, Turkey, Vietnam, Philippines, Trinidad & Tobago, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Venezuela, USA and South Korea." At times, he would go to the same coun tries but explore different cities and areas.

The travel influencer was also invited to various media familiarisation trip. However, the best memory he had throughout his trips was the invitation he received from Thai Airways to celeebrate World Tourism 2016 in Bangkok, Thailand.

Representing  Malaysia, Abang said the trip was special as he had the chance to walk and stand on the Siam Niramit's theatre stage. "Siam Niramit has one of the most amazing theatre stage, with a lavish show about the cultural history of Thailand. There were live elephants dancing !"

Abang also mentioned that a year before that trip, he visited Siam Niramit with his parents and thought of how awesome it would be if he could visit the grand and prestigious theatre. "I cannot believe that what I had dreamed about before came true!" he said.

On another note, the most unfortunate moment for him as a travel blogger was when he almost lost his e-mail and blog to a hacker. "Luckily the situation was controlled immediately."

Having gained a huge following, Abang said he did not expect his blog to go far. Previously, he did not have to worry much and just openly share his travel stories. "But now, I need to be extra careful when posting something. For example, when I post about food, I need to think of how the netizen will react. I need to make sure every fact posted is correct before publishing."

Apart from that, another challenge that is currently faced by most travel bloggers around the world is being called a 'free-loader' -this is because society thinks a travel blogger blogs about travelling only to receive special treatment. "For me, it does not matter if companies want to collaborate with me or contact me. However, I always have my own travel plan regardless to keep myself busy."

Abang also shared that in the modern world of 2020, "We have to compete with the new generation." As an 'old' influencer in the travel industry, Abang said one of the challenges he goes through is the need to adapt to the latest trend.

"Currently, video contents are making a big wave. So, I need to upgrade my skills to include video content in my blog." Other than that, Abang also said that it is difficult to juggle between travelling and blogging. "Usually I don't update my blog during my travels. I only update my social media accounts." Hence, his blog post about his travels would usually be updated when he is back home.

When asked how he sustains his travelling, Abang disclosed that aside from working, he would also receive sponsors for collaboration to blog from tourism organisation, hotels, and airlines.

He also received revenues through advertising and reviews done on his blog and social media. "So that means, the more I travel, the more content I write, and it then leads to revenue".

Life as an influencer in the 21st century

An influencer in the 21st century means someone who has the follow ers who learn from them or benefit from their content. With this rising opportunity, marketers of the 21st century now have different platforms to advertise instead of the traditional printed media, or on television and radio.

With the increasing number of 'influencers', Abang said while it is a lucrative industry, it is good to only limit it as a side income. He opined, "There is a need to have your career for your future. As the 'influencer' trend may be the game now, but as with all trends, it will fade. So, you're going to need a back-up plan."

He also shared a piece of advice for the young ones to do whatever they love, as long as it is not for the sake of gaining money."Money will come after. Just make sure you do things for the love of it."

Nonetheless, Abang said a video-content influencer s 'Youtuber' is a different ballgame. "They can do it full time if they want. With the right content, a Youtuber can generate more money than anyone."

Being a travel blogger to him can be tiring but also fun. "When I travel on my own, I do not consider myself as a travel blogger, rather a traveler. That is why I do not blog during my trip as I want to concentrate on my adventures."

At the end of the day, Abang said he feels that it is more worthy to concentrate during his travels for the benefits of his readers when they read his post.

When asked what are his tips on becoming an 'influencer', Abang said, "Firstly, you need to choose your niche -something that you are passionate about. Then, be yourself and make good and quality contents for your social media channels."

He said that it will take some time to increase the followers but with the right content and target, "lnshaAllah (God willing) you will succeed." He also added that at the initial stage, postings need to be consistent. "You also need to engage and communicate with
your audience to let them know you appreciate them."
